Condom Broke!

Help! The Condom Broke!

Practical Advice for both Men and Women in an Emergency

Condom breaks do not happen often. In fact, it most commonly only happens when couples do not follow the recommendations on proper condom use. At the end of this article is a list of steps you can take to minimize the risk of condom breakage. But what if the condom does break?

Do not panic

First of all do not panic. Take a deep breath and calm down. This way, you will be able to think the situation through and make sensible decisions.

Important tip for ladies: DO NOT douche immediately following a condom break. This can actually drive sperm and bacteria deeper into your vagina.

There are really just 3 things you need to think about:
1. Pregnancy
2. HIV
3. STDs

Presumably since you were using a condom in the first place, there was no intention for pregnancy. Women are at risk of pregnancy even if the condom breaks before ejaculation.

The simplest thing is to see a Doctor and get morning after pills. These are most effective if taken within 48 hours.

If you can, have a calm discussion with your partner about his or her risk of HIV. This includes a history of intravenous drug use, multiple sexual partners, visits to prostitutes or men who have ever had sex with another man.

If your HIV risk is high please see us immediately for HIV PEP.

Remember that a recent negative test for HIV does not guarantee that your partner does not have HIV as he or she might still be in the window period.

If the risk of HIV is not high, both of you should go for HIV testing at 1 month and again at 3 months after the event. Keep each other informed about your HIV test results if possible.

If the risk of HIV is high which means:
1. Your partner uses intravenous drugs
2. Your partner has multiple casual sexual partners
3. Your partner is a sex worker
4. Your partner visits sex workers
5. Your partner is a man who has had sex with another man
6. Your partner is known to have HIV

In the above situations, or if you are unable to determine the risk level, see your Doctor immediately for a discussion on HIV PEP. Women are at a higher risk than men to catch HIV especially if the condom broke after ejaculation.

STDs are very contagious and the likelihood of either party catching an STD after the condom broke is high. Even if your partner tells you he or she is completely symptom free it does not mean you are not at risk of STDs. This is because men and women can both carry STDs and show no symptoms.

Both of you should see your Doctor and be screened for STDs. The following STDs should be tested for:
1. Syphilis
2. Hepatitis B
3. Gonorrhea
4. Chlamydia

Other STDs such as NSU, Hepatitis C, Herpes and HPV can also be screened for. Speak with your Doctor if you also need to test for these.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to prevent Condom Breakage:

  • DO use water based lubricants such as KY jelly.
  • DO use proper sized condoms.
  • DO hold onto the condom when withdrawing.
  • DO store condoms in a cool dry place.
  • DO NOT reuse a condom.
  • DO NOT open the condom package with your teeth, keys or any sharp object.
  • DO NOT unroll the condom before putting it on.
  • DO NOT wear 2 condoms at once. Friction can cause breakage.
  • DO NOT use oil based lubricants such as Vaseline. This can weaken the latex.
  • DO NOT use expired condoms.

If you had a high risk exposure to HIV within the past 72 hours, you can take medicines to reduce your risk of actually contracting HIV. Find out more on HIV PEP Treatment.

  2. Hello docter. I am male and had sex with a sex worker girl for the first time 15 days back. And my condom broke and i ejaculated in her before we noticed about condom broke. I asked her hiv status but she said no hiv to her. But i hav got rashes on my feet now which are itchy and also feeling fatigue and muscle ache and stomach pain. No fever. I am also curcumsized. I am taking PEP after 21 hours of sex.
Please guide as i m freaking out.

    • Complete your PEP and go back to your doctor for testing.

      • Do pep helpful in unprotected sex? And is it helpful when ejaculated… U know wat i mean to say docter

  3. I’m a female and I have protected sex with this guy and the condom broke he came in me at the last min I’m externally scared I contracted giv from this single sex act I immediately took a plane b and I’m scared to death what are my chances of getting hiv I’m all scared I’m loosing my mind and I’m soo worried I don’t know what to do!

    • You need to see a doctor immediately and talk to him about getting HIV PEP. You also should talk to your doctor about screening for other STDs.

  4. I have been on birth control for about a year now and take it everyday. My boyfriend and I have regular sex but he always pulls out before ejaculation. Today we decided to use a condom for the first time and he ejaculated inside of me. I stood up and of bed and semen came out of me and dripped onto my legs. We realized the condom had broken. Should I take Plan B? Is there any chance I can still get pregnant?

    • If you have been taking your birth control pills regularly and according to your doctor’s instruction, that is 99% effective. So the chance of you getting pregnant from this is very remote but obviously not zero. Please see your doctor for more advice. We cannot recommend you to take or not take medication online.

  5. Donavan

Lately my pee has been buring and bright yellow .. Could I have chlymidia ?

    • Yes you could. Or Gonorrhea or NSU or Klebsiella or E Coli or Pseudomonas …… the list goes on. Basically, see a doctor and get tested and get treated. Don’t waste anymore time. All these are easily curable.

  6. Hi Is it possible to have hiv within 24 hours

  7. For a few months my girlfriend has been getting signs before her period her boobs start To get sore a week before her period .. But this particular month she hasn’t gotten any signs and she was suppose to get her period the 4th what’s happening ?

    • She’s pregnant?

      • I hope not . She hasn’t been showing symptoms of pregnancy .. Could her late period be due to stress ? This is already the 4th day she was supposed to get it the 4th

  8. I’ve been exposed to an infected blood through several cuts on my fingers. I took ill after about 5 weeks…muscle aches, headache, oral sores. I took a rapid HIV 1/2 test, hep A,B,C, VDRL, all negative at 67 days post exposure. At the lab, I learnt about PEP and took it for 28days..though I later learnt it won’t be effective unless initiated within 72hrs.
its been 9 months now from d last dose of PEP and I continue to test negative on antibody rapid tests despite overwhelming persistent symptoms. Am I conclusively negative or do i need further test. would the late initiation of PEP affect the accuracy of these tests. thank you sir.

  9. Question:i am on pep treatment and three days on when i was having sex with my partner (who is HIV positive and his viral load is not detected) the condom broke and we didn’t known until we finished. What are my chances of getting HIV and what should I do.

  10. Hi dr, on 21st Sep i had sex with a social worker. In the midst of it, the condom broke(probably 5-10mins before we realized), we changed into a new condom and proceeded to finish what we started of. Just wanted to know what are my chances of get HIV or any STDs, because after a week of the incident i’m currently having minor flu, sore throat, not sure is it due to the haze or is it a form of symptom. What are my chances of getting HIV?

  11. If women on top and breake the condom… is she get pregnent 3 to 4 days before period

    • Dr Justin Sim

Women can get pregnant regardless of position. But being 3-4 days before her period makes it very unlikely.

  12. My girlfriend told me she went to the restroom and she noticed a light colored blood and her period isn’t due till another week or so . What does this mean ?

    • Dr Justin Sim

This is likely due to intermenstrual spotting, which is very common. However, if you are worried then I would advise getting her to attend a doctor in person for further assessment.

  13. I recently had sex with my girlfriend .. While we were having sex the condom broke but I didn’t know so I ejaculated inside her but there was Sperm still in the condom and on her leg and my bed . We took a shower afterwards she Cleaned herself is she pregnant ?

    • Any reason to believe she will not get pregnant? I understand there was semen everywhere but some must have remained in her vagina. Which means unless she is on birth control or not fertile, there is a chance she can get pregnant. If this is not in either of your plans, she may want to see a doctor for emergency contraception.

      • Is there a chance she isn’t pregnant ?

      • It’s been 2 weeks anything I can do to prevent pregnancy ?

        • About 17 days

          • Of course there is a chance she is not pregnant. Bring her to see a doctor, she might still be eligible for Mirena IUD.

  14. my gf had her periods on the 17jan 2015 n v had sex on 27jan n after 4 hours she took i pill. on 2feb she started to have spotting followed by a heavy bleeding for 2days n spotting again n it stop… on 16feb she started spotting again followed by a heavy bleeding for just one day n it stop.. nw she is having food cravings, she is gaining weight… is she pregnant?

    • Likelihood of her experiencing spotting in between her periods could be due to emergency contraceptive pill she took. The best way to tell if she is pregnant is to do a pregnancy test.

  15. Thanks for your prompt response Dr Tan, I already finished the 28 days of PEP on January and when I went to retest they said no that I have to wait for a complete 3month before any test again. I just hope any pray that my next post is gonna be a negative out of the test. Thanks and may God empower you the more.
