Video on the HIV Window Period and Test Accuracy

HIV Window Period and Test Accuracy

” Hi, I’m Dr Tan from Dr Tan and Partners.

Today we are going to talk about the HIV Window Period and the Accuracy of HIV tests.

This has understandably caused a lot of confusion.

The HIV Window Period is the time from when a person is infected with HIV to when our tests can tell us that he or she is infected with HIV.

This means if a person who is infected does a test during this so called window period, the test will tell us he is NOT infected with HIV even though he is. This is called a false negative test.

Logically, the window period depends on the type of HIV test done.

The PCR RNA HIV test is accurate from 10 days after infection.

The 4th Generation HIV test aka the combo test is accurate from 28 days after infection.

So what happens between day 1 and 10 you ask? This is called the eclipse period where no tests we have now are accurate.

To keep it simple, just remember this: If you are 10 days to a month from exposure, get the HIV RNA test. If you are 28 days or more from the date of exposure, get the HIV 4th generation test.

Thank you for watching, I’m Dr Tan from Dr Tan and partners”

  3. Hi sir..

97% people hiv windowperiod within 3 months.about 3% people take longer which reason take longer develop antibodies…

If a Pearson do not develop antibodies the p24 antigen still detectable in years?

If a Pearson do not develop antibodies still detect hiv rna pcr qualitative test ?

Ofter 2 years post exposure hiv alere combo p24 antigen test negative.

    Iam 100% negative…

      Hi,

Antigen p24 does not generally persist beyond 2 months after infection. HIV RNA PCR is not recommended by CDC/ WHO as a screening for HIV infection. But yes, RNA can still be detected if one is infected even years after. However use of RNA test is generally for monitoring of people who already are infected and are on treatment. I would consider your result as conclusive.

    Hi doctor.
I am 26 years male. I am circumcised male. I am unprotected vaginal sex single exposer w a girl. Later 9 months found she is hiv positive.

I am read aids vancover and official guide lines say that there are only 4 situations where your HIV test window period may be affected. They are:
    1) Antiviral treatment for Hepatitis C
    2) Treatment for Cancer (Chemotherapy)
    3) P.E.P treatment for HIV
    4) Other immunodeficiency diseases.

my first question is to ask is this accurate information? If a person does not have these diseases his duo test is conclusive at 16 months post exposure and a conclusive test results can not change if repeated anytime further (if no further exposure acquired)

This year june iamget married make children’s and happy family.pls iam 100% negative…

    Thanks sir…

    • Dr. Julian Ng

      Hi,

The answer to your question is yes your results are conclusive especially since you tested it 16 months post-exposure.
